2007 Aleth Girardin Beaune Mouches, 1er Burgundy Red BH89 750 ml 4 $35.00
An elegant, pure and mildly earthy red berry fruit nose introduces energetic, precise and lightly mineral-infused medium-bodied flavors that possess a tangy and slightly dry finish that will probably round out. This should benefit from 5 to 6 years of cellar time. AM
2011 Aleth Girardin Beaune Mouches, 1er Burgundy Red BH89 750 ml 3 $36.00
This is a bit more aromatically elegant with a moderately high-toned mix of both red and blue pinot fruit, earth and discreet spice nuances. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension and solid delineation to the medium-bodied flavors that enjoy a sophisticated mouth feel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins that shape the supple and utterly delicious finish that is mildly dry in the best sense. This should reward a few years in the cellar but also drink well young if desired. AM
2012 Aleth Girardin Beaune Mouches, 1er Burgundy Red BH89 750 ml 5 $38.00
Girardin noted that this produced only 2 barrels instead of the normal 6. There is a subtle touch of wood framing the menthol-inflected, ripe liqueur-like aromas of cassis and dark raspberry. The mouth coating and concentrated middle weight flavors possess a beguiling palate feel before terminating in a delicious, round and balanced finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This has the stuffing to age well but the ample amount of dry extract will make this accessible young too. AM
2008 Aleth Girardin Pommard Charmots, 1er Burgundy Red BH89-91 750 ml 4 $45.00
A background touch of wood does not interfere with the clear expression of the notably ripe red currant, violets and warm earth nose that introduces rich, fresh, fleshy and detailed flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration as well as a dusty and mouth coating finish that is on the austere side while displaying mild youthful asperity. AM
2011 Aleth Girardin Pommard Charmots, 1er Burgundy Red BH90 750 ml 4 $48.00
Here too discreet but not invisible wood surrounds the pretty and appealingly layered aromas of plum, red currant and warm earth. There is good richness and fine volume to the middle weight flavors that also possess relatively fine-grained tannins that contribute to the overall sense of refinement here, particularly on the mouth coating, balanced and solidly persistent finish. This firm and tautly muscular effort manages to at once be very Pommard because not only is there no rusticity, but this is relatively elegant. AM
2012 Aleth Girardin Pommard Charmots, 1er Burgundy Red BH90-92 750 ml 3 $50.00
Discreet but not imperceptible notes of oak and menthol highlight the ripe but fresh aromas of cassis, black cherry and spice hints. The medium-bodied flavors are quite rich, indeed even opulent with good volume and are shaped by soft tannins that add to the seductive mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty and sleekly muscular finish. Good stuff that should be accessible young but reward a decade plus of cellar time. AM
2007 Aleth Girardin Pommard Epenots, 1er Burgundy Red BH91h 750 ml 3 $52.00
A relatively high-toned and solidly complex nose that is both elegant and attractive possesses notes of layered red berry fruit and warm earth that can also be found on the detailed medium-bodied flavors that display an elegant mouth feel that evidences a trace of minerality on the cool, poised and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Noizons, the tannins are sufficiently fine that this could be enjoyed now or held for up to a decade first. Excellent quality here. AM
2008 Aleth Girardin Pommard Epenots, 1er Burgundy Red BH92h 750 ml 4 $55.00
A more elegant and more complex nose offers up restrained spice hints that add interest to the fresh, ripe and expressive red pinot fruit and pungent earth aromas that give way gracefully to the textured, powerful and focused middle weight plus flavors that possess an attractively textured mouth feel on the balanced, mouth coating and impressively long finish. This should be an excellent cellar candidate. AM
2011 Aleth Girardin Pommard Epenots, 1er Burgundy Red BH91h 750 ml 4 $55.00
An elegant, ripe and fresh nose of dark berries, black cherry and earth aromas is trimmed in a background application of oak. There is equally good freshness and verve to the big-bodied yet suave and round medium-bodied flavors that also benefit from the presence of firm yet fine-grained tannins that surface on the focused, powerful and solidly persistent finish. Lovely. AM
2012 Aleth Girardin Pommard Epenots, 1er Burgundy Red BH92h 750 ml 3 $60.00
Here too there is a deft application of wood that is sufficiently light to allow the cool but ripe and pure aromas of dark currant, earth, green tea and sauvage hints to be easily appreciated. The round, fleshy and solidly well-concentrated middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration as well as outstanding complexity on the balanced, distinctly firm and impressively long finale. This will need at least a decade to realize its full potential and quite probably 12 to 15 years. AM
2007 Aleth Girardin Pommard Rugiens, 1er Burgundy Red BH91 750 ml 1 $60.00
An elegant nose of deeply pitched red berry, plum and floral aromas are quite earthy with notes of jerky, herbs and a sauvage hint that continues onto the delicious, powerful and full-bodied flavors brimming with an intense minerality on the seductively detailed, pure and lingering finish. This isn't a big Rugiens but it's refined and impeccably well balanced. AM
2008 Aleth Girardin Pommard Rugiens, 1er Burgundy Red BH92 750 ml 3 $60.00
This is quite reserved, even reticent with moderate wood influence setting off cool, elegant and very pure red pinot fruit and stone aromas that marry seamlessly into the intensely mineral driven, powerful, detailed and impressively precise tautly muscled flavors that culminate in a very firm, explosive and remarkably persistent finish. This is presently an understated effort that also has everything it needs for a long life. AM
2011 Aleth Girardin Pommard Rugiens, 1er Burgundy Red BH92 750 ml 4 $65.00
Moderate reduction presently dominates the nose and I would strongly suggest decanting this if you're going to try a bottle young. There is excellent volume and richness to the beautifully well-detailed and intense flavors that also exude a fine minerality on the powerfully long but impeccably well-balanced finish where a touch of wood appears. This will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellar time and 12 to 15 will be required for it to realize its full potential as this is a concentrated 2011. AM
2012 Aleth Girardin Pommard Rugiens, 1er Burgundy Red BH92 750 ml 2 $65.00
Notes of slightly toasty oak and menthol add breadth to the fresh and relatively expressive black raspberry liqueur and spice aromas that evidence a background nose of the sauvage. Here too there is excellent mid-palate concentration but also fine delineation with plenty of mineral character adding lift and a sense of energy to the dusty, mouth coating, linear and seriously persistent finish. This is a classically structured Rugiens that is best left alone for at least 8 to 10 years but should fully reward extended cellaring if desired. AM
2012 Bertheau Chambolle Musigny Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $95.00
2005 Bouchard Pere et Fils Le Corton Burgundy Red BH94 1.5 L 1 $269.00
This is coming along very nicely and while by no means ready at only 8 years of age, it's sufficiently open and supple that it could be drunk now with pleasure. There is fine complexity to the notably ripe yet still very fresh nose that is displaying only a hint of maturity to the black fruit, earth and sauvage infused aromas. There is very clearly a high degree of phenolic maurity to the firm but not hard structural elements shaping the broad-shouldered and very rich flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and stunning good length on the mouth coating finish. This is a big and still very firm wine but as i note there is so much extract that it's not nearly as robust and austere as many '05s are today.
2009 Bouchard Pere et Fils Le Corton Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $95.00
2008 Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots Burgundy Red 750 ml 5 $75.00
2016 Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes Burgundy Red RP(87-89) 750 ml 2 $55.00
The 2016 Fixin Vieilles Vignes is a blend of two parcels, one to the north that produces a heavier style and another to the south that makes a more elegant wine. Using 50% whole bunch with 20% new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and briary, well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, quite chalky in style with a focused, brisk, slightly short finish. Fine, though it is outshone by others within Mortet's line-up.
2016 Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux Burgundy Red RP(93-95) 750 ml 1 $195.00
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux was not affected by frost and yielded a good quantity to the surprise of Arnaud Mortet ?30 hectoliters per hectare. Matured with 50% whole bunch and up to 70% new oak, it has a generous, almost peppermint-tinged bouquet with great vigor and vivacity. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, good weight and plenty of blood orange-tinged black fruit. It is slightly attenuated right on the finish but this should flesh out once in bottle. This is how to make a great Les Champeaux.
