2016 Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques Burgundy Red RP(94-96) 750 ml 1 $235.00
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was affected by 50% to 60% because of the frost, with 20% whole bunch and 70% new oak. It has a very crystalline bouquet with perfumed dark berry fruit, crushed stone and hints of violet that just deliver stupendous precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth entry and great depth, with the new oak nicely integrated, although maybe I might have chucked a few more stems in the vat on the finish? Still, this has great potential, a magnificent Lavaux Saint-Jacques that will dazzle for many years to come.
2012 Domaine de L'Arlot NSG Clos de Forets St-Georges, 1er Burgundy Red BH93h 750 ml 1 $89.00
A distinctly cool nose of purple fruit, earth and a hint of the sauvage leads to powerful, intense yet not really rustic medium weight flavors where the shaping tannins are unusually fine grained, all wrapped in a robust and tautly muscular finish. While this has not completely shed its typical Nuits character, the 2012 version is certainly more polished than usual. In sum, this is really quite good and worth your attention. AM
2012 Domaine de L'Arlot NSG Clos de l'Arlot, 1er Burgundy Red BH92h 750 ml 1 $92.00
This is notably ripe though not roasted or jammy with its aromas of spice, cassis and black berry liqueur. There is impressive concentration to the opulent and generous medium weight flavors that possess an abundance of palate coating extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm but ripe tannins on the impressively long finish. AM
2010 Domaine de Montille Vosne Romanee Malconsorts Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $379.00
2008 Domaine du Chateau de Chorey Beaune Les Cras Vieilles Vignes Premier Cru Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $69.00
2009 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Volnay Cailleret Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $115.00
1996 Domaine Prieure Roch Chambertin-Clos de Beze Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $1,300.00
This wine has an imperfection.
2014 Gagnard-Delagrange Chassagne-Montrachet Burgundy Red 750 ml 11 $39.00
2005 Groffier Chambolle Musigny les Amoureuses Burgundy Red BH93 750 ml 1 $675.00
As it almost always is, this is wonderfully elegant with an airy mix of highly spiced and seductive black fruit aromas of impressive depth that continues on the rich, supple, sweet and mouth coating flavors blessed with ample dry extract that buffers the firm but buried tannins on the long finish. This too is serious but sophisticated and the inherent class is evident.
2013 Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot, GC Burgundy Red 750 ml 2 $162.00
2014 Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot, GC Burgundy Red BH95 750 ml 1 $178.00
Somewhat surprisingly this is notably more elegant than it usually is with its expressive nose of black and red pinot fruit, spice and abundant earth and tea scents. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the precise, muscular and powerful flavors that possess excellent size, weight and finishing punch on the youthfully austere, firm and huge finale that is borderline chewy. This may be moderately more elegant than usual but it remains a Clos de Vougeot all the same and one that it going to require fully 15 years to reach its apogee. If you have the patience, this is knock-out good for the appellation. AM
2013 Jean Grivot Echezeaux, GC Burgundy Red BH94 750 ml 3 $225.00
A background application of wood is sufficiently subtle to allow the notably spicy and ripe yet quite cool aromas of both red and black pinot fruit, herbal tea and floral elements to shine. There is excellent volume to the intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in an explosively long, mouth coating and moderately austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. Grivot is one of few domaines where their Ech is easily a match for their Clos de Vougeot in terms of size, weight and power and overall this is potentially terrific. AM
2013 Jean Grivot Richebourg, GC Burgundy Red BH95-97 750 ml 1 $740.00
This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Ech?zeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. AM
2014 Jean Grivot Vosne Romanee Les Beaux Monts, 1er Burgundy Red BH93h 750 ml 5 $154.00
The perfumed, cool and airy nose is slightly more elegant with its mix of red and dark currant, sandalwood, violet and lilac scents. The polished and equally cool middle weight flavors possess a wonderfully refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grain of the tannins along with more evident minerality on the mildly austere, balanced and strikingly persistent finale. This is a classic Beaux Monts with an ultra-sophisticated mouth feel. AM
2011 Joseph Voillot Pommard-Les Pezerolles 1er Burgundy Red 750 ml 5 $90.00
2012 Joseph Voillot Pommard-Les Pezerolles 1er Burgundy Red BH92h 750 ml 5 $90.00
Moderate wood sits atop spicy and elegant dark currant, earth and wet stone aromas. There is good concentration to the vibrant and mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess excellent depth on the beautifully balanced, intense and lingering finish. This is very P?zerolles in character as it's a refined Pommard built on its minerality.AM
2012 Joseph Voillot Pommard-Les Rugiens, 1er Burgundy Red BH93h 750 ml 2 $125.00
A cooler and more restrained nose of various dark berry fruit, stone and earth nuances is trimmed in moderately toasty oak and menthol scents. There is excellent detail and plenty of mineral character to the broad-shouldered yet refined medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine sense of underlying tension on the saline and moderately austere finish that delivers outstanding length. This is still very much a baby but it has both the balance and raw materials to be outstanding in time. Recommended. AM
2012 Joseph Voillot Volnay-Les Champans 1er Burgundy Red BH92h 750 ml 5 $84.00
Subtle but not invisible wood treatment allows the red and dark currant, earth and lightly menthol-inflected aromas to be clearly appreciated. There is a really lovely sense of refinement to the delicious and ultra-pure flavors that are muscular but sleek, all wrapped in a mouth coating, balanced and gorgeously long finish. This is an exercise in harmony and well worth considering. AM
2012 Joseph Voillot Volnay-Les Fremiets 1er Burgundy Red BH90 750 ml 1 $84.00
Here the wood treatment is more moderate though hardly invisible with touches of menthol to the relative elegant red pinot fruit and soft spice scents. The lilting but intense middle weight flavors possess a beautiful mouth feel that is really quite fine with ample minerality adding lift to the delicious and well-balanced finish. There is a bit of wood on the finish as well but the overall integration of the structure is much more complete than in the prior wines. AM
