2014 Mongeard Mugneret Clos de Vougeot Burgundy Red RP91+ 750 ml 6 $145.00
The 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the domaine's 0.63-hectares of 45- to 50-year-old vines located in the lieu dit "Grand Maupertui" and "Quatier des Marei Haut" close to the ch?teau. It has a punchy, redcurrant, cranberry and raspberry-scented bouquet with a touch of leather originating from the new oak that will need three or four years to fully integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin on the entry, good depth, quite muscular for a Clos Vougeot, but with impressive persistence on the finish. I still found myself wanting just a little more to come through, so afford this a few years in bottle.
2016 Mongeard Mugneret Clos de Vougeot Burgundy Red BH(91-93) 750 ml 3 $179.00
Background floral notes combine with ripe, earthy, somber and notably serious aromas that are also trimmed in discreet wood along with a hint of menthol. There is very good density to the powerful and tautly muscular flavors that manage to retain a seductive mouthfeel before culminating in an impressively long finish that is somewhat less youthfully austere than it usually is and a bit more refined as well. Very good quality here and this is recommended provided you have at least some patience.
2015 Mongeard Mugneret Echezeaux Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $149.00
2016 Mongeard Mugneret Grands Echezeaux Burgundy Red BH(90-93) 750 ml 3 $250.00
Here the wood treatment is no longer subtle and it completely dominates the underlying spice and fruit scents. On the plus side there is excellent concentration to the rich and full-bodied flavors that possess evident power and muscularity while delivering excellent length on the slightly warm finish where the wood sweetens it. This too is youthfully awkward at present and note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that, like the Ech, this will harmonize if given at least a few years of bottle age first.
2014 Thibault Liger-Belair Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Burgundy Red 750 ml 1 $209.00
2015 Thibault Liger-Belair Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Burgundy Red 750 ml 3 $226.00
2015 Thibault Liger-Belair Hautes Cotes de Nuits La Corvee Villy Burgundy Red ST(88-90) 750 ml 11 $39.00
(harvested on September 11; from a limestone plateau above Nuits-Saint Georges; 100% destemmed): Bright dark red. Reduced nose dominated by redcurrant and smoke. Sappy red berry flavors show good definition, depth and breadth. A step up in complexity from the La Roche and showing a more sophisticated texture. Finishes with noteworthy energy and length.
2014 Tollot Beaut Beaune Greves, 1er Burgundy Red BH91h 750 ml 6 $70.00
A markedly earthy nose is cool, pure and well-layered while revealing notes of plum, violet and dark currant. There is good volume and concentration to the palate coating medium-bodied and stony flavors that terminate in a firm, robust and lengthy finish that is solidly well-balanced. Moderate patience will definitely be required. AM
2014 Tollot Beaut Corton Bressandes, GC Burgundy Red BH93 750 ml 4 $88.00
This is slightly fresher than the straight Corton with its slightly more elegant combination of lavender and lilac-inflected red berry liqueur, earth and softly spicy aromas. There is excellent intensity to the medium-bodied, sleek and chiseled flavors that exhibit a discreet minerality on the wonderfully long finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. This is textbook Bressandes that should amply repay 12 to 15 years of cellaring yet one that should also be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. AM
