2011 Aubert Cix Chardonnay RP91 750 ml 2 $119.00
The 2011 Chardonnay CIX Vineyard is the least expressive of these single-vineyard wines. Bright floral notes meld into various shades of citrus. There is plenty of polish, but the CIX doesnít have anywhere near the level of complexity and/or nuance of the best wines in the range. Today, the CIX appears to still be somewhat of a work in progress relative to the high level that is customary throughout the rest of the range. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
2012 Aubert Cix Chardonnay RP99 750 ml 3 $260.00
A wine that stood out for its complexity and intensity was the 2012 Chardonnay Cix Estate. Planted with the Reuling clone of Chardonnay, this vineyard is situated next to the vineyard from which Mark Aubert makes the Lauren Chardonnay. There are only 600 cases of this prodigious wine. The vines were planted in 2007, so this is only the fifth leaf, but, wow, what a Chardonnay. Copious notes of pineapple, mango and guava along with wet stone, caramelized citrus, tangerine and orange marmalade characteristics are followed by a wine with a full-bodied mouthfeel as well as remarkable purity, texture and intensity. One of the most individualistic and greatest Chardonnays I have ever tasted, this amazing wine should drink well for 7-10 years.
2013 Aubert Cix Chardonnay RP97 750 ml 8 $159.00
The 2013 Chardonnay Cix Estate, also from a Montrachet clone planted on Goldridge soils, displays plenty of peach, apricot, caramelized apples, citrus blossom and wet stones in a full-bodied, powerful, rich and pure, precise style. This is another beauty from 2013 that should easily age for 10+ years.
2012 Aubert Eastside Chardonnay RP99 750 ml 2 $185.00
The 2012 Chardonnay East Side, a vineyard owned by top viticulturist Ulises Valdez, is a 1,000-case cuvee that reveals a liquified wet stone character intermixed with notes of white currants, quince, honeysuckle, pineapple and peach marmalade. Strong minerality as well as a remarkable finish make this a candidate for perfection. It should drink well for 6-10 years as well.
2012 Aubert Eastside Chardonnay RP99 1.5 L 1 $699.00
The 2012 Chardonnay East Side, a vineyard owned by top viticulturist Ulises Valdez, is a 1,000-case cuvee that reveals a liquified wet stone character intermixed with notes of white currants, quince, honeysuckle, pineapple and peach marmalade. Strong minerality as well as a remarkable finish make this a candidate for perfection. It should drink well for 6-10 years as well.
2013 Aubert Eastside Chardonnay RP100 750 ml 5 $275.00
The 2013 Chardonnay Eastside is from a vineyard owned by Ulises Valdez, and planted with the Montrachet clone on the very low-yielding rootstock called riparia gloire. This wine displays terrific intensity, plenty of stony minerality, and great precision in its notes of subtle white peach, pineapple, almond paste, brioche and crème brûlée. This is a killer wine and a perfect example of 2013 Chardonnay at its best. I never thought this wine could hit this peak, but the proof is in the tasting, and the wine, which was somewhat shy and reserved after bottling, has truly come to life over the last three to four months. This five-acre vineyard sits on a west-facing hill on Eastside Road in the Russian River. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
2008 Aubert Larry Hyde and Sons Chardonnay RP96 750 ml 2 $169.00
From Carneros, the 2008 Chardonnay Larry Hyde and Sons Vineyard is the most tropical fruit-scented Aubert offering, and it reveals more bold hues to its straw/green color. A dense nose of marmalade, nectarines and tropical fruit (pineapple) is followed by full-bodied, intense flavors and a stony minerality that emerges with coaxing. This is a big, bold, California-styled Chardonnay to enjoy over the next 5-7 years.
2009 Aubert Larry Hyde and Sons Chardonnay RP95 750 ml 2 $138.00
The 2009 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard comes across as rich, round and layered. Dried apricots, peaches, flowers and tangerine are some of the notes that flow from this sumptuous, well-spoken Chardonnay. The wine turns more and more delicate with time in the glass. I loved it. This is a great showing from Mark Aubert. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
2013 Aubert Larry Hyde and Sons Chardonnay RP96 750 ml 1 $135.00
The 2013 Chardonnay Larry Hyde and Sons, like most of Aubertís Chardonnays, always seems to have a greenish hue to its light straw/gold color. This wine comes from one of the coldest vineyards in the Aubert portfolio. The 2013 does offer some delicate pineapple, damp earth and wet stones as well as a touch of white currants and quince. This beautifully fruited wine is medium to full-bodied, has great acidity, and should continue to drink well for at least another decade.
2009 Aubert Lauren Chardonnay RP95 750 ml 1 $149.00
The 2009 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard is one of the more understated wines in this lineup. It also shows a bit more freshness and brightness than the other 2009s. Tangerine, mint, light floral honey and spices are all beautifully layered into the detailed, nuanced finish. The French oak is better balanced here than in the Reuling, which allows the fruit to show the fullest breadth of its personality. Here, too, the finish seems to expand in every direction. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
2011 Aubert Lauren Chardonnay RP95 750 ml 2 $129.00
Aubertís 2011 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard flows across the palate with hints of butter, marzipan, spices, nectarines and dried apricots. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2011 is another of the more overt wines in this range. Still, there is more than enough underlying minerality to balance the fruit. The old Wente and Montrachet clones work well here, but the vines are only 12 years old, which suggests the best is still very much in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2019.
2012 Aubert Lauren Chardonnay RP98+ 1.5 L 1 $380.00
We finished the Chardonnay portion of the tasting with Mark Aubertís favorite wine, the 2012 Chardonnay Lauren Estate, which comes from rich Goldridge soils. There are 1,000 cases of this straw/greenish-colored beauty fashioned from various clones, including the Old Wente, Hyde, Hudson Corton-Charlemagne selection and the Mt. Eden clones. It possesses more of a tannic backbone than its siblings because of its grip. Full-bodied with lots of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade and abundant fruit on the attack and mid-palate, this youthful Chardonnay seems barely touched by its oak aging. All of these 2012s will be irresistible when released in 2014, but should age beautifully for 6-10+ years.
2013 Aubert Lauren Chardonnay RP98+ 750 ml 3 $195.00
The 2013 Chardonnay Lauren Estate is made from 15-year-old vines from the old Wente and Mt. Eden clones of Chardonnay planted in Goldridge soils. This wine offers loads of nectarine, honeysuckle, liquefied rock, quince and white currants. The wine has incredible richness, no real evidence of any of the 100% new oak it is aged in, and a multi-dimensional, long finish. This compelling Chardonnay is still young and capable of lasting 10-15 years.
2004 Aubert Quarry Chardonnay RP95 750 ml 2 $139.00
Made from an old Wente clone, the 2004 Chardonnay Quarry Vineyard offers notes of lemon oil, crushed rocks, white peaches, and a hint of orange blossoms in a full-bodied, gorgeously textured, super-fresh format buttressed by terrific acidity. This stunning Chardonnay should drink beautifully for 4-5+ years. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak (which is totally concealed) and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, if it has just been shipped or moved, it can reveal a slight haze.
2009 Aubert Reuling Chardonnay RP94 750 ml 2 $139.00
The 2009 Chardonnay Reuling Vineyard is the biggest and richest of these 2009 Chardonnays. Pastry crust, spices, tangerine and dried apricot are all woven together beautifully in this large-scaled, expressive Chardonnay. Aubert used 100% new barrels here, which comes through ever so slightly in the texture of the fruit. An exuberant, explosive finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
2010 Aubert Reuling Chardonnay RP95+ 750 ml 1 $145.00
The exuberant 2010 Chardonnay Reuling Vineyard is another big, big wine bursting with fruit. Caressing the palate from start to finish, this is a decidedly broad shouldered, expansive Chardonnay loaded with power and energy. White flowers, apricots and spices add lift on the finish. The 2010 Reuling bears more than a passing resemblance to some of the greatest white Burgundies, but with that extra volume that is typical of California Chardonnay. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.
2006 Aubert Ritchie Chardonnay RP93 750 ml 6 $114.00
There are just over 200 cases of the 2006 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard. Displaying a more evolved style than usual, it offers up notes of buttered hazelnuts, lemon oil, honeysuckle, and a hint of spice. Drink this full-bodied, rich Chardonnay over the next several years.
2012 Aubert Sugar Shack Chardonnay RP99 750 ml 1 $195.00
From a 5-acre Rutherford vineyard planted with the Montrachet clone, the prodigious 2012 Chardonnay Sugar Shack Estate (400 cases) exhibits notes of liquid stones, tangerine oil, peach blossom and a hint of pineapples with staggering minerality. Full-bodied with sensational purity, texture and richness, it was hard to spit this one out. It will age effortlessly for 10+ years.
2009 Aubert UVSL Chardonnay RP94 750 ml 1 $129.00
The 2009 Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard emerges from the glass with rich apricots, pears, flowers, and tangerine, all of which come together in a dramatic, sweeping expression of Chardonnay. In 2009 the UV-SL has a rich, baritone register that is compelling. The aromas and flavors build effortlessly to the textured, creamy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2019.
2010 Aubert UVSL Chardonnay RP94 750 ml 5 $115.00
The 2010 Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard boasts remarkable textural depth and finesse. Rich, round and seamless, the UV-SL is all about body and endless layers of flavor. An element of salinity gives a finish laced with white flowers and citrus of considerable freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
