The utterly perfect, dense ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barbaresco Asili (Red Label Riserva) is a heroic offering brilliantly displaying both power and elegance. The bouquet develops incrementally, offering up aromas of black raspberries, cherries, cigar box, licorice, and leather. The wine impresses with its nuances as well as its extraordinarily rich, dense mid-palate, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. There is huge tannin, but equally massive concentration, extract, and overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.

Terrific aromas of blackberries, toasted oak and cedar with hints of Cuban tobacco. Full-bodied, with a phenomenal richness and balance. It literally goes on for minutes. Layers upon layers of fruit and ripe tannins. Mind-blowing. How can Nebbiolo be better? This is a new wine from Voerzio, from one of Barolo's top vineyard sites. Best after 2011. 440 cases made. –JS
2004 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sori Ginestra Italian Reds RP96 750 ml 3 $95.00
Conterno-Fantino have once again produced one of the vintage?s finest wines with their stunning 2004 Barolo Sori Ginestra, which is just as impressive in bottle as it has been on the several occasions I have tasted it from barrel. This explosive, heady Barolo bursts onto the palate with seamless layers of ripe dark fruit, black cherries, menthol, cinnamon, pine and minerals, revealing profound depth and richness. It offers superb length, gorgeous, sweet tannins and a finish that lasts forever. Although it is a surprisingly accessible Sori Ginestra at this stage, I expect it will close down at some point in the near future. Readers who have an opportunity to taste this wine in the next few months should not hesitate to do so. This is a remarkable Barolo in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

The 2004 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra sweeps across the palate with stunning depth and expansiveness in its dark cherries, menthol, spices, chocolate and sweet toasted oak. It offers exceptional length and delineation, with a note of freshness that provides lift on the close. It is a profound effort from Domenico Clerico. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
2004 Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia Italian Reds RP96 1.5 L 1 $249.00
The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is pure silk on the palate. The 2004 is never going to be a huge Rancia. Instead, it is the wine’s elegance and poise that stand out most. In this tasting, the 2004 comes across as a modern day 1990, even if the vintage was quite different from a climactic perspective. Sweet roses, spices and licorice are all woven together beautifully on the impossibly fine, dazzling finish. This is a wine of unbelievable harmony. Proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin and longtime oenologist Franco Bernabei have elevated Sangiovese to a level of sophistication rarely seen. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.
2004 Parusso Barolo Bussia Italian Reds WA93 750 ml 4 $99.00
The 2004 Barolo Bussia is a superb example of Parusso?s philosophy. An array of spices, roasted coffee beans, plums, prunes and toasted oak flavors emerge from this pretty, layered Barolo. As it sits in the glass it gains volume and weight, with attractive mentholated, balsamic notes that add further complexity. Despite its depth and power, the wine remains graceful and light on its feet, showing terrific poise and balance. Sweet notes from the oak frame the long lingering finish. I tasted this alongside the 2001 and found a slight preference for the older vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024.
2006 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Italian Reds WS99 1.5 L 3 $399.00
Shows excellent color and richness for a Sangiovese, with aromas of sultana, coffee, toasty oak and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit and chewy tannins. The concentration and depth of fruit and layers of tannins are breathtaking. A blockbuster. Best after 2014. 5,000 cases made. –JS

Offers blackberry, toasty oak and milk chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a long, rich finish. Concentrated and pretty. Layered and serious. Best after 2011. 2,150 cases made. –JS
2006 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italian Reds RP97 750 ml 1 $190.00
The 2006 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is seductive, round and sweet in its ripe dark fruit. The wine continues to gain weight in the glass, showing a level of density that nearly manages to cover the tannins. Floral notes add lift on the finish. This is a powerful, linear Cannubi Boschis with tons of energy and muscle, but it will require quite a bit of patience. Sandrone harvests his three parcels in Cannubi Boschis separately. Vinification takes place in stainless steel. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation and are aged in 500-liter barrels (roughly 20% new) for a year. Once the final blend is assembled, the wine goes back into oak for another year prior to being bottled in the spring. Sandrone is one of the earliest producers to bottle, which he does to preserve as much freshness as possible. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

The 2006 Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate (magnum) is a dark, sensual beauty. Ripe fruit, violets, licorice, menthol and pine are some of the nuances that are woven into the frame of this rich, expansive Barolo. The wine reveals tons of depth and dimension, but then shuts down rather quickly in the glass. The 2006 Barolo Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate is one of the more imposing wines in this line up of 2006 Barolos, but it is pure magic in a glass. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.
